1-15-07
Phillips Manufacturing Co. and the face of COO Thomas M. Zummach were featured on the front page of the January 12th, 2007, issue of the Midlands Business Journal. The article was titled “Strategic planning, engineering innovations drive Phillips.” The article focused on Phillips ability to produce innovations that benefit the company and the construction industry. The following are excerpts from the article:
“Phillips Manufacturing’s management team has set strategic goals through a process moderated by an outside consultant. While the firm did some of the components informally in the past, industry challenges have caused refining the procedures and involving both input and accountability of employees at all levels of the organization. ‘We’re creating scorecards, and tracking our success’ said Zummach.”
A strong focal point of the article was Phillips innovation. Zummach was quoted as saying the following:
“Our niche has been to place a heavy concentration on our beads, trims and accessories and to take extra steps to add product value. One of the differentiating factors for us has been the innovation we’ve brought to the tool design work, which going back to our founding has been done in-house. We’re continually adding equipment across-the-board and focusing especially hard on production efficiency.”
Not only did the article praise Phillips innovation in the market place, it also highlighted its growth:
“Phillips Manufacturing’s first major acquisition came in 1998 when it purchased the metals division of National Gypsum, a 185,000-square-foot manufacturing plant in Niles, Ohio.”
“Zummach said the fact that Phillips Manufacturing could win out in the competition with other suitors for the National Gypsum acquisition has been an important element behind the firm’s aggressive growth strategy.”
“In 2004, Phillips Manufacturing opened a 14,000-square-foot distibution warehouse in Phoenix and six months ago a facility of similar size in Orlando, Fla.”
In the article Mr. Zummach talks about how Phillips will continue to focus on its core competencies which will result in company growth and expansion for years to come.
